You can save it on there as a back up but your computer needs to read your mods folder that's inside the sims 4 folder

There is a way around having to keep your CC in the My Documents folder. It's called making a junction/symlink(symbolic link). That way you can actually store your CC/Mods/Whatever in a completely different folder or drive and the game will still read it as being in the My documents folder where it's 'supposed to be'.

Yes, this includes putting it on an external drive, but I will warn you outright: Storing any of the files for the game (CC, Mods, Game files, etc) on an external drive WILL increase your lag time. If you have a higher grade USB port and a higher grade USB plug on the external drive, then it might not be so bad, but there will still be increased lag because of the time it would take your comp to read the external and basically 'push it through' to the rest of the comp. Also, external drives tend to spin more slowly (unless you sink in good money for a higher speed drive) which also means more load time. (The slower a drive spins, the longer it takes the comp to access the data on the drive, this goes for internal and external drives.)

Personally speaking, if you really want to get the most out of your gaming experience, then a computer upgrade is most definitely in order, especially if you intend on using a lot of CC. That means a decent graphics card (or two, depending on what your ultimate goal is), a quality processor, and as much RAM as you can get away with. Also, how you organize and maintain your CC will directly contribute to your load times and performance. Removing spaces and special symbols from the file names (CC only, not script mods or anything that's a part of something like Wicked Whims or MCCC), and merging packages will cut down on load times. Just make sure that if you merge packages, keep the unmerged files in a separate location and organized by which files went into which merged packages, that way if you need to update or edit your merged packages you know exactly where everything is and you'll save yourself a headache and heartache down the road.

Long story short, here is a link that very adequately describes the process for making a junction/symlink. I've done it with my CC and put all my CC on a solid state drive so I have space and improved load times. Husband and I built my rig with an eye specifically towards gaming, so if you have any other questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask.
:)
I make pretties sometimes. Check it out!

I decided to do a quick search before asking this exact question and voila. I did fork out a bit of money on a Passport HD/USB a few months back that has 4TB of storage so I'm hoping this will do the trick once I do a junction/symlink. I'm going to try this out within the next hour or so. Thanks for the link!!
